  18. <p>     On the first night, there was touch--a gentle pat, a Dan-and-Connie
  19. hand sandwich. On the second, a series of gushy schoolboy glances.
  20. Was the DAN RATHER--CONNIE CHUNG co-anchorship really just
  21. the CBS Evening News with Regis and Kathie Lee? TV critics didn't
  22. warm to all the initial cuteness. And they particularly didn't
  23. warm to the pair's inaugural-night sign-off. "Goodnight, Chet,"
  24. said Connie. "Goodnight, David," replied Dan, a nod to another
  25. network's historic news team. The Washington Post's Tom Shales
  26. described the interchange as unnecessarily "impish." Harsh,
  27. given that Shales' profile of Chung (which had run 24 hours
  28. earlier) implied that he had given her the idea for the corny
  29. so-long in the first place.
